There have always been many home study courses for the piano and for lots of other instruments too but the last few years has witnessed an increase in the amount of people who learn piano online due to the huge number home study piano courses available. This is a recent innovation that has is pros and cons but on the whole, now that the audio visual technology is capable, more and more people are turning to learning on the web instead of using conventional piano teachers.

Traditional Piano Teachers
Going to a private piano teacher has always been the standard way to learn piano until now. On the whole it can be somewhat limiting having a teacher as the lessons are normally hour long sessions attended once a week. This can at times be tricky to schedule but also your own practice needs to be done before the lesson so you can progress onto higher levels with your teacher. On the weeks that you haven’t been able to practice your teacher will not be able to advance you onto the next lessons. There are several disadvantages too, you are restricted as to what you can learn as most teachers will not let you choose the music or the style you want to play. At the best you will have to pick the teacher for the style they teach and few are versatile and teach multiple styles. With a home study course you can progress at your own pace and will learn not only how to read music and play classical pieces but also how to play by ear and how to play jazz, blues gospel etc..

Here is one of the best piano courses available online:
Rocket Piano

So what have online lessons got to offer?
Flexibility is one of the main reasons why a lot of people learn piano online. You are not tethered to a fixed time slot for their weekly lesson. This will free up a person to be able to practice when and how much is convenient and when they are ready for the next lesson they can progress at will irrespective of if it has been more than a week or less.

Another great benefit of a home study piano method is of course the price difference. Piano lessons usually cost anything from – 0 for an hour. Payment for the lessons has to be made regularly even if you cannot make it for a lesson. An online piano course can be downloaded for around and will give you typically the equivalent of about a years worth of lessons if your are just starting out.

Download an online home study course and you will no longer have to be worried about making time to attend your weekly piano lesson. Nor do you have to be bothered about getting stuck on uninspiring lessons that don’t interest you. Your progress will be completely under your control and you will be able to move through the lessons in the course at the pace which is most comfortable for you.

You become in control of your own learning when you use a home study course. You choose if you will spend more time on a certain lesson that might require more attention and if you can pass over lessons that come really easy to you. Your progress is in your own hands and you decide how much time to spend on each lesson and when to do it.

Generally, trying to learn piano online can be a great fun way to learn without the pressure of regular lessons and is perfect for beginners. At a later date you could go to a professional teacher for a check up to see if you are on the right path and to assure yourself that you have no bad habits developing.

Beginner Piano

If you attended keyboard lessons as a kid and now you are older are wanting to return and take it up again, you will still have to have starter piano lessons. Which ever your situation, the way of learning will be the same.

You might discover that there are a lot of different methods to teach the piano or keyboards but in general they will all have to show you the same fundamentals. A lot of students these days will be practising on keyboards instead of a traditional piano but for a newcomer the learning process are the same. The aim of most students who start with the piano today might be to be able to read music, to have the skills to play some classical music, and in many cases to be able to play in different styles like jazz, pop, rock etc. They might also want to learn how to accompany singers and other instrumentalist.

As a beginner, to have such goals could appear somewhat ambitious but before you embark on your piano playing journey you will need to get clear what you want to get out of it. If you put your mind to it you will soon be accomplishing many of your goals.

There is a method of teaching piano that I really love which is used by a home study course called ‘Piano For All’. To start with they teach you is how to find the notes on the keyboard.Fist of all you are taught how to find all of the notes on the keyboard. The next step is to show you how to play a simple tune which uses all of the fingers, as a leaning aid. This melody is also written down in both easy to follow keyboard diagrams and traditional musical notation

This part of the lesson is completed in a very short time. Then you will be taught three notes with which you are able to play a basic chord. To play the chord you are given a simple little rhythm to play. Next you are taught how to play the first note of the chord with your other hand only an octave further down the keyboard which forms the bass line. Add a rhythm to this and suddenly you are playing authentic sounding piano.

Here is a comparative review on the best piano courses available.
Best Piano Courses

Once you have this feeling easy to play, which will be almost immediate, you are then taught a few more simple basic chords. With the handful of chords you have learned you can put them to one of the rhythms you have been taught and playing the chords in a sequence you will find yourself able to play recognizable songs. Learning this method is great for the confidence and leaves you wanting to learn more. As you move on you are taught some different chords, different rhythms and tunes. All of what you play is shown as keyboard diagrams and on the musical stave too. You will be playing real sounding piano or keyboards in much less time than you imagined.

This is actually one of the best beginner piano courses available at the moment as it teaches you many styles including pop, classical, rock jazz and gospel. It also verses you in reading music as well as playing by ear.

There is a full video review of this course on my web site if you are interested Piano For All Review

The idea of learning how to play the piano may seem somewhat scary to you when you are just starting out. You must have watched someone play the piano and wondered how on earth they manage to do that with so many keys and combinations of fingers to remember. For someone who has never played the piano or keyboards before rest assured that it isn’t necessarily as complicated as it might seem. With the right tuition or advice learning how to play the piano can be a really simple and straight forward process and not complicated at all.

Here are a few pointers on how to play the piano and to see that beginners piano doesn’t have to be as complicated as it appears:

Allow time
It can be fairly easy at first to learn some easy techniques and be playing simple music right from the beginning. The problem is progressing from there. The trick is to know that you need to allow your fingers to develop and your brain to get used to telling your fingers what to do. Practicing regularly is the only real way to develop. You will get to the point where you find that you are no longer struggling as much as you were before, your fingers will seem more responsive and your playing will sound better.

Practice every day
Playing each day strengthens the connections that are being made in your brain that tell your fingers what to do when you are learning how to play the piano. If you take a day off from your practice routine this can set your progress back substantially. Daily practice is important for the beginner so even if you don’t have time of motivation then try and sit at the keyboard for at least a few minutes to play something. After taking a few days off playing you will find that you have to work doubly hard afterwards to get back to the same level you were at before.

If you want more information on home piano courses check out the site below
Learn To Play Piano Keyboards

Left hand and right hand
You should try practicing your pieces one hand at a time. At the beginning you should play the right hand part of the piece on its own. After having repeated this a few times you might discover it has become a little easier and smoother. Once you feel comfortable with the right hand you should try practicing the left hand part on its own until this feels comfortable too. Once again practice this left hand part until it is easier. Try playing now with both your hands together, you will realize that it is now much easier than before. You will find that this is an extremely effective way to progress rapidly and to learn pieces faster. Pieces you already know can also benefit from being played with separate hands from time to time.

Get some ear training
This is something that will mature over time as you are learning how to play the piano but you will find that a lot of pianists have what is known as a ‘good ear’. You wouldn’t be able to tell if you were playing wrong notes if you did not have a good ear. A good ear can be trained and you don’t really have to be born with it. There are lots of ear training exercises to help you recognize intervals between notes, many of these can be found on the Internet or come bundled with home study piano courses.

Have fun
The best advice I can give is to enjoy yourself whilst playing (it isn’t called ‘playing’ for nothing). It can be very easy to be hard on yourself whilst playing, especially if things aren’t going well. If there are days that you don’t feel like practicing then just sit at the piano anyway and maybe play some scales or some other pieces that you are not currently practicing just to keep your hand in. Remember that the more fun you have the better the end result will be. Though not always possible you should try and choose the pieces that you play and practice making sure that you are going to be playing music that you like and can enjoy.

Follow these tips as well as you can and you will find that learning how to play the piano doesn’t have to be complicated or boring in any way. Follow some of the tips offered here and you will surely be able to practice to high levels of proficiency and enjoy every moment of it.

If you attended keyboard lessons when younger and now you are older you want to return and take it up again, you will still have to take beginner piano lessons. Even if you have never sat at a keyboard before, the method by which you are taught will remain the same.

You might find that there are a lot of different methods to teach the keyboards or piano but in general they will all have to show you the same basic material. Many students nowadays will be playing on keyboards instead of the normal piano but for a beginner the learning process will be the same. The aim of a lot of beginners is to be able to play a little in different styles, they might want to have the ability perform classical, jazz, pop etc and many want to be able to play by ear and also read a little music too. They may also want to learn how to accompany singers and other instrumentalist.

All of this may seem a little ambitious for a complete beginner but you should know your direction right from the very start. Within a relatively short period you will find that you can achieve all of the above.

A short while ago I had to write a review for a home study piano course called ‘Piano For All’, I loved the method they used for teaching. The teaching methods they used in this course impressed me a lot. These same notes are then shown to you on the musical stave so you can go about getting used to them. You are then taught what these notes look like on the musical staff. Then they show you a simple tune which is to be played using all of the fingers, one for each key. This melody is written in musical notation and as a simple keyboard diagram

That is only the first part of the first lesson. Now you will be taught three notes with which you are able to play a basic chord. You make the chord sound by playing it to the easy rhythm they show you. Next you are shown how to play the first note of the chord with your left hand only a little further down the keyboard which forms the bass line. They give you a rhythm for the bass note and suddenly you find yourself playing a musical phrase that sounds good and isn’t difficult to play at all.

Here is a comparative review on the best piano courses available.
Learn to Play Piano

Try this chord for a while then move on and learn a couple of different chords. By Using the rhythms they teach you and changing chords from one to the other making a chord sequence you now find yourself playing an authentic piano accompaniment to which you or someone else could sing or play along to (This will all have happened in a matter of about 20 minutes or so). This is a wonderful method for learning the piano as it can make you feel secure and gives you an appetite for learning more. Moving on through the course you get taught some different rhythms and a few more tunes and chords. All of what you play is printed as keyboard diagrams and on the musical stave too. You will be playing real sounding piano or keyboards in much less time than you imagined.

This is actually one of the better beginner piano courses available at the moment as it teaches you many styles including pop, classical, rock jazz and gospel. It also verses you in reading music as well as playing by ear.

If you want more information on the Piano for All course I have made a video review which can be seen here Piano For All Review

When you first sit at the piano you may be daunted by the prospect of learning, especially if you have never played an instrument before. It actually can be a lot easier than you imagine. As an encouragement to getting you started I have put together a short video guide called How to learn the piano in under 10 minutes.

The best way to become really good at any instrument is by means of regular practice. If you can be up and playing real music right from the start then these practice sessions will become a lot more enjoyable making your progress all the more effective.

The first few weeks of playing you will fumble and make many mistakes. This is normal and as time goes on and you establish a constructive and enjoyable practice schedule your playing will become smoother and more confident.

How To Get Started:

Find out where the notes on the keyboard are

Learn some basic chords

Apply some rhythm

To play to most popular songs, these are the first steps you need to take. To start with you can use chord sheets. Later you will find that you are able to add melody lines to your playing.

Sign up for our free Piano guide and Chord Sheet at the Beginners Piano website. It is a really basic beginner level guide on how to find the notes on the keyboard and how to play the 24 basic major and minor chords. This will be enough to get you started playing the piano.

Once you have the absolute basics of piano playing mastered and you decide you want to pursue it further then you should consider one of the home study courses that we review on our website such as Rocket Piano or Piano for All.

Here is the video, how to learn the piano in under 10 minutes:
