The idea of learning how to play the piano may seem somewhat scary to you when you are just starting out. You must have watched someone play the piano and wondered how on earth they manage to do that with so many keys and combinations of fingers to remember. For someone who has never played the piano or keyboards before rest assured that it isn’t necessarily as complicated as it might seem. With the right tuition or advice learning how to play the piano can be a really simple and straight forward process and not complicated at all.

Here are a few pointers on how to play the piano and to see that beginners piano doesn’t have to be as complicated as it appears:

Allow time
It can be fairly easy at first to learn some easy techniques and be playing simple music right from the beginning. The problem is progressing from there. The trick is to know that you need to allow your fingers to develop and your brain to get used to telling your fingers what to do. Practicing regularly is the only real way to develop. You will get to the point where you find that you are no longer struggling as much as you were before, your fingers will seem more responsive and your playing will sound better.

Practice every day
Playing each day strengthens the connections that are being made in your brain that tell your fingers what to do when you are learning how to play the piano. If you take a day off from your practice routine this can set your progress back substantially. Daily practice is important for the beginner so even if you don’t have time of motivation then try and sit at the keyboard for at least a few minutes to play something. After taking a few days off playing you will find that you have to work doubly hard afterwards to get back to the same level you were at before.

Left hand and right hand
You should try practicing your pieces one hand at a time. At the beginning you should play the right hand part of the piece on its own. After having repeated this a few times you might discover it has become a little easier and smoother. Once you feel comfortable with the right hand you should try practicing the left hand part on its own until this feels comfortable too. Once again practice this left hand part until it is easier. Try playing now with both your hands together, you will realize that it is now much easier than before. You will find that this is an extremely effective way to progress rapidly and to learn pieces faster. Pieces you already know can also benefit from being played with separate hands from time to time.

Get some ear training
This is something that will mature over time as you are learning how to play the piano but you will find that a lot of pianists have what is known as a ‘good ear’. You wouldn’t be able to tell if you were playing wrong notes if you did not have a good ear. A good ear can be trained and you don’t really have to be born with it. There are lots of ear training exercises to help you recognize intervals between notes, many of these can be found on the Internet or come bundled with home study piano courses.

Have fun
The best advice I can give is to enjoy yourself whilst playing (it isn’t called ‘playing’ for nothing). It can be very easy to be hard on yourself whilst playing, especially if things aren’t going well. If there are days that you don’t feel like practicing then just sit at the piano anyway and maybe play some scales or some other pieces that you are not currently practicing just to keep your hand in. Remember that the more fun you have the better the end result will be. Though not always possible you should try and choose the pieces that you play and practice making sure that you are going to be playing music that you like and can enjoy.

Follow these tips as well as you can and you will find that learning how to play the piano doesn’t have to be complicated or boring in any way. Follow some of the tips offered here and you will surely be able to practice to high levels of proficiency and enjoy every moment of it.
